[2018] Cusco

Cusco is the main tourist starting point. The city has a lot to offer in terms of history, architecture and gastronomy.

It also represents the starting point for multiple day trips to various Inca sites or landmarks or longer journeys to Machu Picchu or Salkantay. Situated at an altitude of 3,400m it's highly recommended to spend a few days for acclimatization before going higher.

The salt mines are from pre-Inca times. Highly salty water emerges at a spring and is directed across hundreds of terraced ponds.<br />

The owners must be members of the community and ponds are available free of charge. The size of the pond is proportional with the family size.
